Thea Smartt Henry / Dutchman’s Pipevine (Durior) Plant (gallon pot)

Dutchman’s Pipevine (Durior) Plant (gallon pot)

$ 20.66

Description Dutchman’s Pipevine is a fabulous and luxuriant vine with large bright green heart-shaped leaves. An eastern North American native. Host plant for the larvae of the Pipevine Swallowtail, a large and crazy looking caterpillar. We grow these specifically as a part of our Swallowtail Butterfly project – it is the food plant for the larva of the Pipevine Swallowtail! Rich, Moist woods – part sun location. Needs water and doesn’t like dryness – but well-drained soil is important. Flowers are very odd looking – brownish/burgundy with a rotten-meat like scent (so fly-pollinated…). They can go unnoticed as they are small and usually covered by the prolific leaves. Needs something to climb on. Not aggressive at all. A characteristic plant of the southern Appalachian hardwood forests. Flowers of this genus were once used as an aid in childbirth, since they were thought to resemble a human fetus.
