Saligna (Eucalyptus saligna) is a popular South African hardwood known for its straight grain, versatility, and reddish-brown hue. Saligna dowels are extensively used in furniture making, DIY shelving, curtain rails, and decorative trim due to their strength and smooth finishing properties. Standard Sizes & Dimensions In South Africa, Saligna dowels are typically available in lengths of 1.8m, 2.4m, and 3.0m. Common diameters include: Thin (Detailing/Joinery): 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm Medium (Shelving/Crafts): 15mm, 18mm, 22mm Thick (Structural/Curtain Rails): 30mm, 32mm, 35mm, 40mm Key Features Natural Hardwood: Unlike pine or MDF, Saligna is a true hardwood that offers better structural integrity and screw-holding capabilities. Finish Ready: The wood takes stains, oils, and varnishes exceptionally well. It can be polished to a high sheen or painted for a contemporary look. Straight & True: Professional-grade dowels are kiln-dried to minimize warping, ensuring they remain straight over long spans (especially important for curtain rails). Locally Sourced: Being a local timber, it is often more cost-effective than imported hardwoods like Oak or Meranti. Working with Saligna Sanding: Although usually sold pre-sanded, a quick pass with 180-grit and then 240-grit sandpaper before oiling will produce a superior finish. Drilling: When joining pieces, use a brad-point drill bit for the cleanest hole. Ensure your drill bit matches the dowel diameter exactly (e.g., use a 12mm bit for a 12mm dowel). Gluing: Standard wood glue (PVA) works perfectly with Saligna. Wipe away excess glue immediately with a damp cloth to prevent staining.
